1/17/2024 0 Comments Poison type pokemon sceneryMeanwhile literally every Psychic type gets access to an 80 BP STAB in… uhh… psychic… Most Pokémon on Gen 1 had to struggle with weak moves such as Sludge or Sky Attack, and even types with strong moves such as Cross Chop suffer from poor distribution. Move power is a big reason for Psychic’s dominance. You can’t really buff Butterfree and Beedrill because they serve a neccessary and important design function as part of the tutorial Their issue is that they are forced to run nothing but Normal moves because their movepool are nonexistent. The best Bugs in Gen 1 are Pinsir and Scyther, and they aren’t bad statwise. The best Bug move in the game was Twineedle of all things. But that's a game design matter to discuss at another day.ĭesign wise? The most important thing is to actually create Bug moves. Fighting turned out to be really weak whereas Psychic ended up being completely overpowered, because of how the Special Stat was designed and because of the sheer number of Poison types. Of course, the developers predictions were wrong. Literally just thrown in to counterbalance how OP the designers felt Fighting was going to be. Thus that's why Psychic has a type interaction with Poison and Bug. And the only other common types in the game are Poison and Bug. And since Fighting and Psychic are counterparts and Fighting is effective/weak against 2 common types (Normal+Rock and Flying+Psychic respectively), it would make sense to let Psychic be super effective and weak against 2 common types too. However, in its current state, Psychic would only interact with 1 type. Psychic being supereffective made sense too, because "brains over brawn" is a common logic. As a result, the designers felt that Fighting was too overpowered, and thus allowed Psychic to be supereffective against it. Compared to other types such as Fire, Ice, or Rock, Psychic is incredibly boring and barely interacts with anything.Ĭonsidering these, it's fairly likely that there was a specific thought process that led to Psychic's typing, and as a game designer myself, I'd hypothesize its probably this:įighting and Psychic are counterparts, but Fighting is effective against Normal and Rock, which are two of the most common typings in the game. Second, the type chart - Psychic is a very "uninteractive" type, dealing super effective damage against two types (Fighting and Poison), taking super effective damage from two types (Ghost and Bug), resisting two types (Fighting and itself), and being resisted only by itself. Remember that, back in Gen 1, the game designer's thought processes were VERY different from today.Ĭonsider two key factors: First - Psychic and Fighting are intended to be counterparts, representing physical and special damage respectively. The most likely reason is not because of lore, but because of designer intention.
